Morocco- the KINGDOM of LIGHT !

Geographical advantages

Morocco’s strategic location in North Africa and its proximity to Europe, makes it an attractive hub for renewable energy development for export. The country has existing electricity interconnections with Europe, which can be used to export excess renewable energy generated in Morocco.

Robust Moroccan economy

Morocco, a significant force in the African economy, has rebounded from the slowdown caused by the pandemic and natural disasters.  According to the African Development Bank outlook, the country will grow at 3.5% in 2024 and 3.8% in 2025, respectively. The services sector contributes more than 50% of the country’s GDP. Morocco’s resilience and ability to put the economy on a growth trajectory are testaments to favorable policies propelling rapid growth. The country has a clear roadmap for economic growth supported by a clean energy policy.

Energy Scenario- Morocco

Morocco, a country with 33 million people, has 100% electricity access. Moreover, over 80% of the population has access to clean cooking fuel. Morocco's current per capita energy consumption is about 1200 kwh. The country is currently registering over 5% energy demand growth year-on-year. However, it is dependent on imports for all its energy needs—a whopping 91% of energy fuel comes through imports. The good news is that Morocco’s decarbonization policy is accelerating the shift to renewable energy. It has set an ambitious goal to cut carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. The aggressive energy transition is achievable due to the nation's abundant renewable energy sources, including solar and wind.

Energy mix

Morocco’s total installed electricity capacity was 11.42 GW in 2023. Of this, 21.7% came from renewable energy sources. Wind energy dominated the renewable energy segment at 2017MW – 30% more than 2022. In 2023, Morocco had 3.69 GW of installed renewable energy which increased to 4.11 GW in 2023.
